Fall float trips in Southwest Alaska ~ Kanektok or Goodnews Rivers?

Posted on March 14, 2025January 24, 2026 by guides@akrainbow.com

When planning a fall float trip the end of August or during early to mid-September on either the Goodnews River or the Kanektok Rivers in Alaska, there are several important factors to consider that can help you choose the best experience for your adventure.

Target Species and Fishing Focus:
Both rivers are fantastic for fishing, particularly during early September, when the Coho (Silver) salmon run is in full swing. Additionally, both rivers boast solid populations of resident fish. The Kanektok River is renowned for its impressive diversity, featuring species such as Rainbow Trout, Arctic Char, Grayling, and various types of salmon. It’s an ideal spot for anglers who want the chance to catch a wide variety of fish. Conversely, the Goodnews River is also famous for its exceptional Rainbow Trout, and September brings incredible Arctic Char fishing, all enhanced by strong Coho salmon runs.

River Characteristics and Float Experience:
The Kanektok River generally offers a longer float, spanning about 100 miles, which allows for an immersive wilderness experience. In comparison, the Goodnews River presents shorter float trips that allow you to focus your efforts on the best fishing spots, potentially leading to higher catch rates and more thrilling encounters on the water.

Logistics:
Both rivers are located in remote areas accessible only by flying in from Bethel, Alaska. Be sure to account for the differences in take-out points and overall logistics to ensure a smooth return journey to Bethel, making your trip as stress-free as possible.

September Conditions:
In early September, be prepared for late-season weather, which can be unpredictable with cooler temperatures and occasional rain showers. However, this adds a touch of adventure! Both rivers will see Coho salmon feeding aggressively, alongside resident fish that are more than willing to bite.

In summary:
If you’re looking for a longer, more varied wilderness experience with a wide range of fishing opportunities, our Alaska float fishing trips here at Alaska Rainbow Adventures on the Kanektok River are the way to go. However, if your preference is for a shorter, slower paced and more focused fishing adventure—especially targeting Coho salmon and Arctic Char—the Goodnews River has the distinct advantage.

About Us

Step into the current with Alaska Rainbow Adventures and you're stepping into the real Alaska — not the polished lodge version, not the brochure fantasy. For more than three decades, we've run rivers the way they're meant to be run: the Kanektok, Goodnews, Alagnak, Moraine, Arolik, and Togiak. Wild water. Wild fish. Country that doesn't bend for anyone.

This whole thing started with one guide, Paul Hansen, chasing the kind of days that get under your skin and stay there. A mouse‑eat in the half‑light. A bend in the river no one else will see that day. A rainbow flashing in the sun like it owns the place. Those moments hit you in the ribs and remind you why you came north. That feeling is the reason we're still out here.

Our trips are built the way Alaska demands: small groups, real wilderness, and gear that holds up when the weather decides to test you. Big tents you can stand in. Hot meals cooked beside the river. Guides who know every braid and every mood swing these waters can throw. With exclusive USFWS permits and miles of river to ourselves, every float is unhurried, unfiltered, and honest.

This isn't a vacation.
This is the real deal — take it or leave it.

It's a week where the noise drops away, the river calls the shots, and you remember what it feels like to be fully present in a place that doesn't care about your inbox or your deadlines. You don't just fish here — you feel the country in your bones.

Come see what's waiting for you!
