The 2026 season has been an unusually wet one across much of Southwest Alaska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Alaska Rainbow Adventures, the rain itself hasn’t necessarily been the biggest challenge. Our trips are wilderness float trips. Rain is part of traveling and fishing in Southwest Alaska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bigger issue has often been flying weather<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Rainy Day and a No-Fly Day Aren’t the Same Thing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One thing that’s difficult to understand until you’ve traveled in remote Alaska is that conditions on the river and conditions for aircraft can be two very different things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can have perfectly good conditions for floating, camping and fishing while low clouds, fog and reduced visibility prevent an aircraft from safely reaching the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our trips on rivers such as the Kanektok and Goodnews begin well beyond the road system. Guests, guides, food and equipment all move in by aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means there’s one part of every trip none of us can control: the weather has to allow the airplane to fly safely.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A steady rain doesn’t necessarily stop an Alaska floatplane. Low ceilings and poor visibility can.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That distinction mattered a lot this season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Challenge of Persistent Weather<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Southwest Alaska weather is always variable. A front moves through, it rains, conditions improve and operations continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What made parts of the 2026 season harder was persistence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of isolated bad-weather days, we experienced stretches when wet maritime weather remained over the region for several days \u2014 bringing low clouds, fog, rain and reduced visibility, all of which can affect aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s no simple workaround for that. There are no roads to the upper Kanektok or Goodnews. We can’t put guests on a bus or drive guides and gear to another airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We wait until the pilots can safely fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Alaska, that decision belongs to the pilot.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weather Delays Can Affect More Than One Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Several days of poor flying weather can create effects that outlast the weather itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When aircraft are grounded, scheduled flights begin backing up. Once conditions improve, everyone who has been waiting needs to move, and it can take time for air-taxi operations to catch up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s why we work closely with our transportation providers and plan guide, equipment and guest movements well ahead of departure \u2014 and continue reviewing those plans as departure approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even with careful planning, wilderness aviation ultimately depends upon weather, aircraft and safe flying conditions. It’s part of operating where we operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bad Flying Weather Doesn’t Mean Bad Fishing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rain doesn’t mean poor fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the best fishing days happen under gray skies. Our equipment, camps and routines are designed for a wet environment, and our guides aren’t waiting for blue sky to launch the rafts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What concerns us operationally is weather severe or persistent enough to affect river safety, water conditions or transportation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s very different from simply seeing rain in the forecast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why We Take Travel Insurance Seriously<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 2026 season reinforced something we’ve told guests for years: a remote Alaska expedition involves circumstances neither you nor we can control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commercial airline disruptions, an air taxi unable to safely reach the river, changing river conditions, wildfire, high water or other wilderness conditions can affect a trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s why we require guests to carry travel insurance covering their nonrefundable trip payments and related travel expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just as importantly, not every travel-insurance policy treats these situations the same way.<\/strong> Before purchasing coverage, guests should confirm directly with the insurer how the policy applies if weather, river conditions or other wilderness conditions prevent Alaska Rainbow Adventures from safely operating a trip \u2014 even when commercial airlines or air-taxi operators have not completely ceased operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Planning for 2027<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After a season like this, naturally we’re being asked what it means for next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right now, the answer is: we don’t know.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s a developing El Ni\u00f1o that could influence the North Pacific storm pattern, but it’s far too early to make a responsible prediction about Southwest Alaska’s weather during July, August and September 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And rainfall totals aren’t the only thing we’ll be watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of particular interest to us will be the potential for persistent Bering Sea weather systems<\/strong> capable of producing the low clouds, fog and poor visibility that matter so much to wilderness aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we get closer to the 2027 season and the forecasting picture becomes more meaningful, we’ll continue watching it. When there’s something worth sharing, we will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s Part of Traveling in Remote Alaska<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There’s a reason places like the upper Kanektok and Goodnews remain wilderness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are no highways alongside these rivers. No bridges every few miles. No easy alternate route when Alaska weather won’t cooperate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s also part of what makes these trips extraordinary.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our job is to plan carefully, work with experienced transportation providers, watch conditions and make the best decisions we can with the information available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the time, it all works exactly as planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Occasionally, Alaska reminds all of us who’s really in charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the summer of 2026, that’s a reminder we’re unlikely to forget.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n
