Alaska’s Kanektok and Goodnews Rivers are calling

Posted on September 17, 2024October 7, 2025 by guides@akrainbow.com

Embarking on a multi-day …

float fishing trip in remote Alaska guarantees awe-inspiring scenery, diverse wildlife encounters, and a complete immersion in nature. It’s an outstanding way to break free from the ordinary and indulge in some of the world’s most exceptional fishing opportunities, like hooking a leopard Rainbow trout or Coho Salmon on one of southwest Alaska’s epic float trip waters.

The  Kanektok and Goodnews Rivers in Southwest Alaska are prime locations for fishing enthusiasts seeking a wilderness adventure. Both flow through the Togiak  National Wildlife Refuge and offer a chance to encounter Alaska’s big game and bird species in their natural habitat. These waters are remote and unspoiled treasures in southwestern Alaska,  meandering through untouched landscapes and wilderness surroundings. Your float trip with us begins at the headwaters lake of the Kanektok or Goodnews River,  depending on which trip you have chosen, and meanders westward through the foothills of the Akhlun Mountains. The upper section provides breathtaking views and is home to innumerable Dolly Varden and  Arctic Grayling. The middle section is more braided, making it ideal for Rainbow fishing, especially for those wishing to get in some top-water mousing action! The rivers then flow into the tundra-filled lowlands in their lower sections,  where you can, at the correct times, find excellent Chinook and Chum salmon angling.

Float trips on both rivers offer excellent camping, stunning scenery, and incredible fishing opportunities. While the Kanektok River is one of the longer rivers we visit here at Alaska Rainbow Adventures, it is a rafter’s paradise. One can spend the entire day catching fish without leaving the raft. However, you can wade and explore waters off the main channel to search for that trophy fish whenever possible. The Goodnews River, being shorter overall, allows for additional wading opportunities at a slower pace.

The incredible biomass in these river systems explains why the Kanektok and Goodnews  Rivers are home to some of the best fly fishing in the world and are often referred to as ‘fish factories’  due to the insane number of fish and different species available. The float trip fishing season for us starts in early July with Mousing for Rainbows amidst the  King and Sockeye salmon runs and ends in mid-September with colorful Arctic Char; the Silver Salmon run is gradually coming to a close, and it when the rivers Leopard Rainbow are their fattest after gorging all summer long. The abundance of fish in these rivers promises an exciting and rewarding fishing adventure.

Embark with us on an unforgettable adventure down either the Kanektok or Goodnews Rivers, where you’ll have the opportunity to camp in peaceful seclusion each night on expertly chosen gravel bars, surrounded by unparalleled fishing opportunities. Our Alaska Float Trip Program promises world-class Alaskan fishing with top-notch camping accommodations and exceptional food. Our spacious tents, equipped with chairs and cozy cots, provide a comfortable refuge in inclement weather for up to two anglers and their gear. Additionally, we offer a custom-built dining tent and screened area to accommodate the entire group for dining or as a gathering space. Our Alaskan-made tents are built to withstand even the harshest conditions, ensuring safety, comfort, and a remarkable fishing experience. With over 30 years of experience, our commitment to providing the best guides, service and amenities is unwavering.

About Us

Step into the current with Alaska Rainbow Adventures and you're stepping into the real Alaska — not the polished lodge version, not the brochure fantasy. For more than three decades, we've run rivers the way they're meant to be run: the Kanektok, Goodnews, Alagnak, Moraine, Arolik, and Togiak. Wild water. Wild fish. Country that doesn't bend for anyone.

This whole thing started with one guide, Paul Hansen, chasing the kind of days that get under your skin and stay there. A mouse‑eat in the half‑light. A bend in the river no one else will see that day. A rainbow flashing in the sun like it owns the place. Those moments hit you in the ribs and remind you why you came north. That feeling is the reason we're still out here.

Our trips are built the way Alaska demands: small groups, real wilderness, and gear that holds up when the weather decides to test you. Big tents you can stand in. Hot meals cooked beside the river. Guides who know every braid and every mood swing these waters can throw. With exclusive USFWS permits and miles of river to ourselves, every float is unhurried, unfiltered, and honest.

This isn't a vacation.
This is the real deal — take it or leave it.

It's a week where the noise drops away, the river calls the shots, and you remember what it feels like to be fully present in a place that doesn't care about your inbox or your deadlines. You don't just fish here — you feel the country in your bones.

Come see what's waiting for you!
